我花了很长时间才明白一个道理：大多数人并没有致力于构建一个连贯、简约且解释力最强的世界观。他们并非试图将自己的大脑打造成宇宙的最佳映照。
他们的语言使用方式截然不同，而这源于他们对自我本质的完全不同认知。
像我这样的人，将思考的主要目标投向外在世界。我们生来就是为了应对那些无法被欺骗、安抚或讨好的物理实体。它们就是那样存在着，而我们所能做的最好的事，就是去理解它们并顺应其规律。虽然我不信传统宗教，但这里与“顺从上帝”的概念颇有共鸣。如果我把石头砸在脚上，它就会让我疼。对此发怒是无用的。我能做的只是学习石头的运作原理，并规范自己的行为以避免这种命运。我是一个在规则既定的世界中航行的个体。
而大多数人生活在一个几乎完全由他人、其他心智构成的世界里。心智是可以被欺骗和安抚的，这便造成了一个幻觉：似乎所有的答案都在于诡计、安抚和共识。重要的不是你做了什么，而是别人认为你做了什么。他们是蜂群思维中的神经元，无法理解任何存在于这个群体之外的事物。规则就是他们能说服足够多的人同意的东西。
问题在于，第二种模式只能通过寄生在第一种模式上才能生存。总得有人去真正地搬动石头、收获食物、制造GPU。但那些“蜂群思维者”真的不懂这一点。他们认为通往乌托邦的唯一障碍，就是一群不愿承认乌托邦美好的刻薄鬼。他们真的没有外部物理规则和限制的概念，会把任何试图向他们科普这些的人视为仅仅是另一个争夺权力的神经元。
这是一个相当悲观的结论。这意味着大多数人甚至不适合统治自己，更别提一个国家了。但我们不能因为这个结论令人不快就回避它，否则我们就和他们没什么两样。
One thing that took me far too long to understand is that most people are not engaged in the project of building a coherent, parsimonious, maximally explanatory worldview. They aren’t trying to turn their brains into the best possible mirrors of the universe.
They use language in a fundamentally different way, and this is downstream of a fundamentally different conception of themselves.
People like me see our primary target of thought as external. We are designed to deal with physical things that can’t be tricked or placated or appeased. They simply are, and the best we can do is to understand how they are and flow with them. Although I am not traditionally religious, there is a rhyme here with the notion of submitting to God. If I drop a rock on my foot, it will hurt me. Raging against this is useless. All I can do is learn how rocks work and conduct myself so as to avoid this fate. I am an individual navigating a world with fixed rules.
Most people live in a world made almost entirely of other people, other minds. Minds can be tricked and appeased, and this creates the illusion that tricks and appeasement and consensus are the answer to everything. It doesn’t matter what you do. It matters what other people think about what you do. They are neurons in a hivemind and cannot comprehend the idea of anything outside it. The rules are whatever they can convince enough people to agree to.
The problem is that the second mode can only survive by parasitizing the first mode. Someone has to actually move the rocks around, harvest the food, fabricate the GPUs. But the hiveminders genuinely don’t get this. They think all that’s standing in the way of utopia is a bunch of meanies who won’t agree that utopia would be good. They genuinely have no concept of external, physical rules and limits, and they see anyone who attempts to educate them on this subject as merely another neuron angling for power.
This is a pretty bleak conclusion. It means most people aren’t even fit to rule themselves, let alone a nation. But we can’t flinch away from it just because it’s unpleasant, or we’re no better than them.
